He and Emma Beatrice Primley were described as Grandfather James Knapp was a tall, good-looking man. He was a logger, which took the family from Michigan to the deep woods of Northern Wisconsin, wherre they often lived in make-shift shacks close to the logging camps. Often he stayed at logging camps and only came home on weekends. This made for a lonely life for my Grandmother. My Uncle Wayne found diaries and other writings of hers indicating she felt very isolated. The children rarely saw their father, and shortly after Glenn was born in 1923, the Grandparents separated permanently. This put the responsibility for the family fully on Grandmother and the older children, especially my mother (Nora).
The family first went to Coquille, Oregon, where they visited awhile with the Napiers, a family from Taylor Rapids who had come out about a year earlier. The boys took jobs cutting railroad ties in the forest above Powers, Oregon. A forest fire raged through the area, completely wiping them out. They loaded what they had left and headed for Monroe, Washington, where they found work on the Frye Lettuce Farm. The wages were around 25 cents an hour dropping to even less as Frye imported workers from Korea and the Phillipines who would often work just for room and board.
